There goes May! Welcome, soon-to-be-summer. To mark this transition to my favorite season, tomorrow I start a never-before-attempted endeavor: a 30-day challenge at my Bikram Yoga studio. Thirty classes in 30 days. This may not sound like a big deal, but these classes are 90 minutes long, held in a room that’s 105 degrees and 40 percent humidity. They say you can burn as many as 500-1000 calories in a Bikram class. Believe me, you sweat your socks off. Only you don’t wear socks—you wear as little as possible because clothing only sticks to you and you have to peel it off after class. What a way to kick off summer! You can’t tell which is hotter—the yoga room or outside! I started practicing Bikram a year ago, and I remember watching some obsessed yogis “doing a double” or sometimes a triple toward the end of June, two or three classes a day to make up for ones they missed during the month. I thought they were insane. Well, here I am, a year later, joining them. Embarking on my own Julie & Julia challenge, only without a talented star I’m stalking and without 365 tasty recipes requiring vats of butter. Hmmmm. Now that I put it that way, maybe I should choose more wisely?
